In the realm of traditional livestock breeds, the Gloucestershire Old Spots (GOS) pig occupies a revered position. Known for its characteristic black-spotted white coat and gentle nature, the GOS pig has a storied past rooted in the English countryside.  The Heritage of Gloucestershire Old Spots

A Storied Past

The Gloucestershire Old Spots, affectionately known as “Old Spots,” originates from England’s Gloucestershire region. Its lineage dates back to the early 20th century, with the establishment of the GOS Breed Society in 1913. This lineage crowns it as the world’s oldest recorded pedigree spotted pig breed.

A Distinct Appearance

The GOS pig is immediately recognizable by its white coat speckled with bold black spots. The breed standards are stringent – the presence of at least one spot is mandatory for registry acceptance. The GOS’s floppy ears, which drape over their faces, add to their distinct and endearing look.

Characteristics and Farming Practices

Gentle Giants

Renowned for their docile and affable temperament, GOS pigs are a favorite among small-scale farmers and homesteaders. Their calm disposition is coupled with an instinctual prowess in motherhood, making them excellent breeders and caregivers for their offspring.

With fewer than 200 annual registrations in the U.S. and a global population of under 2000, the breed is classified as rare and endangered. The advent of intensive farming practices nearly obliterated many heritage breeds, including the GOS. However, a shift in consumer preference towards ethically produced, quality meat has revived interest in pasture-raised breeds like the GOS.

Recognition and Preservation Efforts

In a nod to its unique characteristics and historical value, the GOS pig has been awarded Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG) status by the European Commission. This designation, conferred upon “Traditionally farmed Gloucestershire Old Spot.”
